Baazaar Review: Saif Ali Khan’s performance as ‘Business Investment Tycoon’ is gripping!

Director: Gauravv K Chawla

Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Rohan Mehra, Radhika Apte, Chitrandga Singh

Genre: Crime- Drama

Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘ Baazaar’ released today on the box office. The crime drama revolves around the world of Stock market broking, insider information of stock market, unethical practices in Business and a maestro Business Investor who plays with the stock market on his own terms.

Saif Ali Khan is playing Shakun Kothari, a  Gujarati Investor who has an undying spirit to rule the stock market and gain maximum profits from each stock he invests in. Shakun Kothari is a self-made man, who rose from rags to riches. Although the means and practices he used to achieve the king size life are not really appreciable, the mastermind Kothari never forgets his roots. Saif Ali Khan as Kothari reminds us of Ranvir Singh of Race. His on-screen presence is authoritative, powerful and totally impressive!

Baazaar marks the debut of Rohan Mehra, son of veteran Bollywood actor Vinod Mehra. The star kid is playing the role of Rizwan Ahmed, an Allahabad (Prayagraj) University Topper, who worships Shakun Kothari and aspires to work with the business tycoon one day. He grabs the first job as a stockbroker in the top Stock market organization and his journey to reach Shakun Kothari starts from there.  In the first half, Rohan covers the major screen-time with his youthful, inspiring character. To comment about his future in Bollywood, we would say -Baazaar definitely gave him limelight that he could have stolen, but newbie actor gave a manageable performance, assuming it will take 2-3 movies for him to master the box office solely.

Radhika Apte is playing Priya, Rizwan Ahmed’s colleague. The leads later turn into lovers. Radhika’s character is the game-changer who provides cue cards or acts as a linking factor between Shakun Kothari and Rizwan Ahmed. As far as acting is concerned, we felt Radhika seems a bit low on energy and dialogue delivery this time.  Chitrangada Singh as Mandira Kothari is playing the wife of Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan). Throughout the film, we found Chitrangada in very few scenes with less engaging performance. Both Radhika and Chitrangada have significant importance in the film from the plot perspective, but their presence is not well justified.

Considering Baazaar is a thriller drama full of Stock market jargons and power pack dialogues between the male duo more than the leading ladies!

Directed by Gauravv K Chawla, Baazaar showcases the real business world functioning where success is not fairly achieved and so is the case with money. Shakun Kothari’s way is not the right way, but the fast way. In a dialogue, Saif says – ” Marathon me daudne wale ko koi yaad nahi rakhta – Be 100meter champion” describing his attitude towards Business investing. While the tycoon Kothari works from the mind, Rizwan works on emotions.

The pace of the story accelerates from the point where things go wrong from fine in the first half to super messy with Shakun Kothari tricking his investment broker cum partner Rizwan Ahmed. Post interval the plot rushes fast, a SEBI Officer, played by Manish Chaudhary, desperate to catch Shakun Kothari introspects Rizwan after a stock mishap. The tension starts encountering only to end up with the rivalry between both leads. Rizwan threatens Shakun to destroy him and reveal his foul practices and the drama continues!

The plot has a lot to do with the Stock market and Business jargons which is a plus point as it gives realism to the whole stock market setup. A religious prayer, dialogue delivery by Saif creates a good Gujarati mood in the film. The Songs Kemcho, Billionaire by YO YO Honey Singh are peppy, up beats part numbers which are gelled up well with the screenplay.

We would recommend you to watch “Baazaar” this weekend for some business entertainment by Saif Ali Khan, Rohan Mehra, Radhika Apte, Chitrangada Singh and the whole team of crime drama.
